Ayurveda, which was not so familiar to the world a ten yearsago, is now a widely accepted medical practice that can cure any known diseasewith herbs and herbal medications. Treatments in ayurveda are based on medicines, exercises, meditation and massages addressing body, mind and spirit(consciousness), which is unique to each individual and essential for wellness. The vision of body, mind and spirit as one and its natural way to approachdiseases make ayurveda medicines and treatments different from other medicalsystems.

The fundamental principles of Ayurveda got organized around1500 BC. According to Ayurveda Medicine, our body is part of nature- amicrocosm of the universe. There is aself regulating healing system that works in our body and our immune system iscapable enough to deal with almost all problems that affect our body. But stress, inadequate nutrition and bacteria weaken our body and immune system and thislead to malfunction of organs. Ayurveda medicine states that the universe iscomposed of five elements space, air, fire, water and earth. In ayurveda it iscalled Panchabuthas. Every livingbeing is a composition of these five basic elements and it is represented inthe body as Doshas, Dhatus and Malas.

Dosha: It is in fact, something that controls and maintains thebody. There are three doshas and they are known as tridoshas. The Vata (air) dosha governs the nervoussystem and is essential for the accurate function of the other two doshas. Pitta (fire) dosha governs enzymes andhormones in the body and Kapha (earthand water) dosha is responsible for strength.

Dhatus: dhatus or body tissues are the supportive parts of thebody. They are seven namely, plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow and reproductivetissue.

Malas: Malas are the body wastes such as urine, feces, sweat, saliva, tears and other secretions.

Treatments in ayurveda start not just after identifying the symptomsof a disease but looking at the body as a whole.
